For two weeks he had to tremble for his victory. Since Tuesday, however, it has been certain that former policeman Eric Adams will stand in the New York mayoral election for the Democratic Party. After counting almost all of the votes, the municipal electoral commission reported that Adams had a (probably unassailable) lead of a little more than 8,400 votes over his strongest competitor. Because the Democrats rule city politics in the largest American metropolis, the 60-year-old African-American will probably take over from incumbent Bill de Blasio on January 1, 2022.
