Jakarta –
Minister of Women Peru Nancy Tolentino says a woman was burnt alive in a town square by her ex-boyfriend. The victim died five days after undergoing treatment.
Reported by AFP, Saturday (25/3/2023), the victim was named Katherine Gomez (18). He was hospitalized since Saturday (18/3) and suffered burns up to 60 percent of his body. He died after 5 days of being treated.
“He is fighting for his life but, unfortunately, the amount of damage he has sustained makes it impossible for doctors to save his life and they are telling us he has died,” Minister Nancy Tolentino told radio station RPP.
The bleak case shocked the citizens Peru.
According to police, the assailant was a 19-year-old Venezuelan who fled the scene after dousing Gomez with petrol and setting her on fire in a square in Lima.
Several days before the events, Gomez had decided to end their relationship.
Tolentino criticized police for only issuing an arrest warrant for the suspect, identified as Sergio Tarache Parra, on Thursday, five days after the deadly crime.
“The police promised me that they would do everything possible to find him,” said Tolentino.
Tolentino also urged young women not to meet their abusive ex alone because it was “at risk”. He warns against dealing with dishonorable people.
“(To avoid) compromise or relationship with people who do not respect you, who violate your rights,” he said.
