Ewan McGregor: ‘Yoda pop is many times better than CGI-Yoda’

Not everyone was a big fan of the last one Star Wars-trilogie, but luckily Disney has a great success with the series The Mandalorian. The ‘House of the Mouse’ will hope to match this success with the new series centered on the beloved Obi-Wan Kenobi character. Ewan McGregor reprises the role, speaking out about Star Wars in a recent interview.McGregor already played the Jedi master in the prequel-trilogie. During a conversation with Mandalorian protagonist Pedro Pascal he looked back on this. For example, McGregor says Pascal should enjoy his scenes with Baby Yoda because the character uses a doll instead of CGI. That was not always the case.

Big difference
For example, McGregor says he has an unpleasant memory of the digital Yoda from the prequels: ”For my first Star Wars movie, I was lucky enough to be able to work with the Yoda doll. That was great because you really act ‘with’ and ‘next to’ Yoda”.

However, for the second and third movies, a digital version of Yoda was used and it wasn’t nearly as charming. Some of the magic was gone. We know Yoda as a doll because one was used for the original Star Wars trilogy. As a result, the computer-animated version no longer felt like Yoda”.

Serie
The actor also briefly discusses the series, which he believes will feel a lot more realistic than the prequel trilogy: ”We do not use green screens but work with StageCraft technology. The Mandalorian was also made this way”.

StageCraft means that the set is surrounded by a large LED screen on which realistic backgrounds are projected, something that according to McGregor is much nicer.

Result
It’s great not to be in front of green or blue screens. It reminds me of the early days of Hollywood, when there were several sets with three walls lined up and cameras in front of them. You went from one set to another and now we do more or less the same, but we change background instead of set”.

According to McGregor, the technology makes it possible to work in fictional environments and work more easily: ”You don’t have to fly anywhere! During the first thirty years of my career I loved to travel, but now I just want to be able to drive from home to work and back”.
