On Friday, Ewa Demarczyk, one of the most outstanding Polish stage personalities, called the “Black Angel” of a Polish song, died. We recall her conversation in 1998 with TVN’s program director Edward Miszczak as part of the “People on the Road” series. Among other things, she explained the lack of activity in public life. – I am available absolutely to the end, available to the public. From the moment I enter the stage and the lights go out, the sounds begin. And off-stage – no – she said.

Ewa Demarczyk was known, among others, thanks to such songs as “Carousel with Madonnas”, “Rebeka” or “Grande Valse Brillante”. She had avoided the press for years and had not performed. She would be 80 in January of next year. The artist’s death was announced on Saturday by Piwnica Pod Baranami, with which the singer was associated for many years.

“I do not recognize art for art at all”
We recall one of the few interviews with the singer. It was given to TVN’s program director, Edward Miszczak, in 1998 as part of the “People on the Road” series of interviews.

– I don’t recognize art for art at all. Everything I did, I did only for people – argued the artist. Avoiding cameras, publicity and journalists, she asked questions about the attitude of journalists: – Why don’t they come to talk about this poetry, about this music, about these performances?
