With the takeover, Evonik is strengthening its position in the market for cosmetic active ingredients. With locations in Switzerland, France and Germany, Botanica is a leading European supplier of sustainable plant extracts for the cosmetics industry. Botanica is supposed to be in the business Line Care Solutions will be integrated within Evonik’s Life Sciences Division Nutrition & Care.
The takeover is the next logical step for the Care Solutions business line in its transformation into a leading active ingredient partner for the cosmetics industry. The most recent acquisitions include the delivery systems company Infinitec Activos (2021), the biotech company innoHealth (2020), Wilshire Technologies (2020) and ALKION Biopharma (2016). By using the synergies between these complementary technology platforms, Care Solutions expands its own product portfolio, opens up new markets and creates considerable added value.

With the help of the Swiss company’s know-how and extraction skills, Evonik wants to develop a wide range of sustainable extracts in order to expand its broad portfolio of cosmetic active ingredients. Evonik intends to take a leading role in the market for cosmetic active ingredients, which comprises 40-50 percent active plant ingredients. In addition, Botanica’s customizable extracts are to be added to the portfolio of system solutions in the Care Solutions business line. The Nutrition & Care division has set itself the goal of increasing its share of system solutions from 20 percent today to more than 50 percent by 2030.
“Botanica’s strong market position in tailor-made solutions and sustainable raw material procurement and production fit perfectly with our goal of becoming the partner of choice for sustainable specialties,” says Yann d’Hervé, head of the Care Solutions business line at Evonik. Botanica is committed to sustainability and fair- trade. Evonik’s Nutrition & Care division is also said to be sustainable raised to the business principle.
Botanica employs 43 people and was founded in 1998 by the Wälti family. With a portfolio of over 1,000 different plants for extraction, Botanica is a leader in terms of know-how and innovative strength for its customers’ cosmetic formulations. The plant extracts are used in cosmetic formulations and are certified according to the Swiss organic regulation, ISO 9001 and the CSE sustainability standard, including ISO 14001. The individual extracts can be traced back to the field.
