During an interview, the history director of the netherrealm, Dominic Ciancolorevealed that Mortal Kombat 1 is just the first step in a larger story that will be told in the upcoming sequels:
‘Mortal Kombat 1 is like storytelling is a stepping stone. It’s just the first step on this journey. And obviously we’ll see the characters develop, they’ll change, things will happen, but this isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning. And that will be something that we want to evolve as we go forward’
