Last Friday, an elite team of Ecuadorian police armed and forcibly entered the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito to arrest Glas, who had requested political asylum there and was waiting for safe passage to travel to Mexican territory.
The former vice president, who has a six-year prison sentence for alleged irregular financing of the Alianza País party and is also accused of alleged embezzlement of funds during the reconstruction of the coastal province of Manabí after the 2016 earthquake, claimed to be a victim. of “political persecution”.
