After a major fire broke out in Tehran’s Evin prison and continuous gunfire and sirens were heard from this prison, protesters concerned about the conditions of the detainees headed to the prison despite attacks by security forces and surrounding neighborhoods are become the scene of a revolt against the regime.
While the full scale of the Evin disaster yesterday Saturday is still unclear, Iran International sources say at least 4 people were killed in the attack by security forces and the resulting fire.
Evin’s fire was so large that the flames could be seen from hundreds of meters away and, at the same time as this fire occurred, the sound of intense and continuous gunfire could be heard in the vicinity of the prison.
According to initial reports, the fire broke out in Evin Prison at 9:00 am from Ward 7 and prison guards were constantly shooting prisoners. After this confrontation, the prison sirens sounded.
According to reports from Iran International, since the morning there has been a disorder in the 7th ward of Evin prison, sirens have sounded several times and, with the escalation of tension, the sound of gunshots began.
It was reported that after more than 200-300 shots were fired, the prisoners tried to get out into the courtyard and broke down the doors of room 4 south of the prison, but when they reached the last door, the security guards in the halls they started shooting tear gas and colored gas.
For its part, the “Fars News Agency”, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, claimed that the fire in Evin prison was the result of the “clothing warehouse and workshop” in the prison, after an “artificial conflict”. between the prisoners in the seventh and eighth wards.
Regarding the explosions heard during the incident, the Fars news agency said that a number of prisoners escaped yesterday, Saturday, and entered a minefield after a “clash with the security forces”, and that the explosions heard were related to this case.
It was reported that a number of prisoners were in serious condition due to inhaling a large amount of smoke and gas, and were taken to hospital, and a number of other prisoners suffered gunshot wounds and are they too were taken to hospital.
According to reports received from Iran International, the prisoners say at least 4 people were killed. The guards described the situation as catastrophic.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread to separate parts of Evin Prison and part of its roof collapsed due to the severity of the fire.
After the publication of this news, some families of prisoners went to Evin, fearing for the conditions of their loved ones.
The Tehran Neighborhood Youth group also released a statement referring to the fire in Evin prison and called on all citizens, especially those residing around Evin, to “prevent a humanitarian catastrophe” by staying around the prison.
As the fire of Evin prison continued, citizens gathered around the prison and chanted anti-regime slogans such as “Death to the dictator”.
