NASA scientists have discovered evidence of why a group of planets is shrinking. According to a scientific journal, there are all kinds of worlds outside our solar system, and distant alien planets, called exoplanets, could be giant gas objects such as Jupiter, or spheres. Rocky planets about the size of our planet, or even “superjets.” But there is a mysterious gap, where there should be planets that are about 1.5 to 2 times the width of Earth. “Exoplanet scientists have data,” said Jesse Christiansen, a research scientist at the California Institute of Technology. Enough now to say that this gap is not just a coincidence. “There is something going on that prevents planets from reaching or staying that size.” Scientists believe this is because some of the sub-Neptune planets are shrinking, losing their atmosphere and accelerating across the size gap until they become as small as giant Earths.
