Evidence of World Fear After the Emergence of the Omicron Covid-19 Variant

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Australia and a number of other countries have decided to ban flights from South Africa, following the discovery of a new variant of the Covid-19 Omicron.

The emergence of the variant which is now included in the Variant of Concern (VOC) category itself has sparked global concerns and caused a sell-off in financial markets, quoted by Reuters, Saturday (11/27/2021).

Omicron is said to be more dangerous than other variants, although experts do not know for sure whether this will have an impact on the overall development of Covid-19 cases.

This variant was first discovered in South Africa, and has since spread to Belgium, Botswana, Israel and Hong Kong. European countries such as England, Germany, and the Czech Republic even missed out.

While epidemiologists say the flight ban may be too late, many countries around the world including the United States (US), Brazil, Canada and the European Union have announced the ban.

Yesterday, Australia has banned people residing in nine South African states from entering. Meanwhile, Japan said it would extend the ban to three other South African states.

The UK itself is reportedly the first to announce an entry ban for migrants from South African countries. This step was followed by a number of other countries.

Here’s a list of countries that have tightened restrictions with African countries:

1. English
2. Singapore
3. Israel
4. Japan
5. Germany
6. Italy
7. European Union
8. Australia
