A new study from S&P Global Mobility found that after purchasing an electric vehicle, half of their owners return to ICE vehicles as a backup or second vehicle. The main reasons for the return to ICE vehicles include pricing, infrastructure and range. But all this does not apply to Tesla owners, who, like writes Electrek are known for their fierce brand loyalty. Owners of Nissan and Chevrolet also showed the greatest commitment to electric vehicles.
Electric vehicle owners who have returned to ICE vehicles have voiced three arguments: pricing, infrastructure and range anxiety. Other consumers simply felt better having an ICE or hybrid car in the garage as a backup option.
The study looked at data from this year through July and covered a variety of major brands. Nissan leads the way in EV loyalty with 63.2%, followed by Chevrolet with 60.6%.
When it comes to individual model data, 37.3% of Ford Mustang Mach-E owners bought another electric vehicle, compared to 45.8% who chose an ICE vehicle. At the same time, a large number of buyers are switching from Ford trucks or SUVs to both internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrains.
In contrast, among Nissan Leaf owners who bought another EV, the most popular next purchase was a Tesla Model Y at 14.3%, followed by another Leaf at 12.4%. The Chevrolet Bolt also retained the majority of owners (60.7%) with electric vehicles, while 28.8% purchased another Bolt.
When it comes to the luxury segment, data showed that 56.6% of Mercedes-Benz EV buyers are sticking with EVs, a huge jump from 24.3% in Q2 2020. Loyalty for the Jaguar EV also increased from 25% to 56.5%, Audi’s share increased from 25.5% to 50.1%, and Porsche from 23.3% to 36.8%.
Tesla, the market leader, showed an increase in loyalty to electric vehicles from 51.8% to 76.7%.
