Evictions due to non-payment of mortgage or rent rose in 2021, despite the Government’s moratorium

In Estepa launches doubled compared to 2020. Most are due to non-payment of the lease

Los evictions by mortgage default or rent increased in towns in the center of Andalusia last year compared to 2020, the year in which the central government approved the moratorium on evictions for vulnerable families in the context of the pandemic. Last year about 80 families from Écija, Osuna, Estepa and Puente Genil were evicted, which means that every week there was at least one release for non-payment of mortgage or rent.

In the judicial district of Estepa, twelve evictions were registered last year, of which ten were due to non-payment of the lease. Releases doubled in 2021 in Estepa compared to 2020. But when compared to 2019, they have decreased significantly. That year, 22 evictions were carried out, 15 for non-payment of rent and five for foreclosure proceedings. This is reflected in the statistics of the General Council of the Judiciary.

In Ecija also evictions increased last year. The courts of this territory ordered 54 evictions, 17 for non-payment of the mortgage and 34 for a process of non-payment of rent. The releases have increased compared to 2020, when 34 evictions were carried out.

Instead, in Osuna releases down in 2021 compared to the first year of the pandemic. In 2021, seven evictions were ordered, five for foreclosure proceedings and the rest for non-payment of rent. In 2020, evictions doubled in this town.

In Puente Genil more evictions occurred last year compared to 2020: five evictions, three for not paying rent.

Despite last year’s uptick, eviction levels are well below maximum in the last eight years. The case of Écija stands out, where almost 200 home evictions were carried out in 2015, almost four times more than in 2021.

When the health crisis was triggered by the coronavirus, the central government approved a moratorium on evictions from habitual residences for vulnerable individuals and families without a housing alternative. A measure that has been extended in principle until autumn. Despite this so-called social shield, every week there was at least one home eviction in one of the four judicial districts consulted: Estepa, Écija, Osuna and Puente Genil.
