Evgeny Bakardzhiev, a politician from the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century, has died, Nova TV reported.

He was deputy prime minister in Kostov’s cabinet, chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council, a member of the 38th and 39th National Assemblies, but his leading role as regional minister in blowing up the communist leader’s mausoleum is best remembered. Georgi Dimitrov in the center of Sofia in 1999

Bakardzhiev was born on February 10, 1955 in Sofia. In 1989 he entered politics as a member of the Bulgarian Agrarian People’s Union “Nikola Petkov”, part of the UDF coalition. Five years later he headed the UDF-Sofia and became chairman of the Sofia Municipal Council. He led the election campaigns of Stefan Sofiyanski for mayor of Sofia in 1995, of Petar Stoyanov for president in 1996. He heads the National Protest Headquarters and the National Strike of the United Democratic Forces (UDF) to overthrow the government of Jean Videnov and the BSP. Chairman of the UDF election headquarters for the 1997 parliamentary elections. He was elected a Member of Parliament in the 38th and 39th National Assembly, recalls “Club Z”.

His highest management position is in the office of Ivan Kostov, where he is Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development. In this capacity, he leads the negotiations with Gazprom for the supply and transit of natural gas.

At the end of 1999, Kostov removed him, and two years later he was expelled from the UDF and founded a new party, the Bulgarian Democratic Union Radicals.

In recent years, his public appearances have been linked to events at the Levski football club as a member of the Blue Hearts club.

The death occurred at ISUL Hospital after an operation and COVID-19, Nova TV reports.
