Dr. Manar Ghanem, a member of the Meteorological Authority’s media center, said that winter officially begins next Friday.

Ghanem added in a special statement to Masrawy that the peak of the winter season is the beginning of January and February.

For his part, Dr. Gad Al-Qadi, head of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, said that the winter season will begin in Egypt and the countries of the northern hemisphere next Friday and will continue for about 89 days.

He pointed out in a statement to the Middle East News Agency that this day, the peak of winter, is the shortest day of the year, as the length of the day reaches approximately 10 hours, while the length of the night reaches approximately 14 hours, and the sun also reaches its lowest height above the horizon at noon. When it crosses the meridian line, the human shadow on Earth at this time is the longest possible.

He explained that on this day, the Earth’s south pole will tilt towards the sun, which at this time is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn at a latitude of 23.44 degrees south, and the sun will reach its lowest height in the sky at noon when it crosses the meridian.

While Dr. Ashraf Tadros, professor of astronomy at the institute, said that the peak day of winter does not mean that it will be the coldest day of the year, because the coldness and heat of the air are related to weather matters within the atmosphere and there are many factors that fall within the scope of the work of the General Meteorological Authority. As for astronomy, it is related to Only by the movement of the Earth in orbit.

Tadros added that the winter solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere around December 21 or 22 of each year, when the sun reaches its lowest height above the horizon during noon, and the sun’s rays are strongly inclined to the northern hemisphere and almost perpendicular to the southern hemisphere. Except for the Tropic of Capricorn, which is an annual astronomical event characterized by the perpendicularity of the Sun over the Tropic of Capricorn.

The professor of astronomy at the institute confirmed that the conditions of the Earth during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere are reversed at the same time, so while it is winter in the northern hemisphere, it is summer in the southern hemisphere.

On the other hand, Dr. Ashraf Tadros explained that coinciding with the winter solstice that will occur next Friday, the moon will pair with Jupiter (the giant of the solar system) on that day, as we see them side by side in the sky immediately after sunset and entering the night, and they will remain visible throughout the night until The scene begins to set at around 2:30 am.

He added that the term conjunction is the approach of a celestial body to another celestial body within a number of degrees of arc when they are viewed from Earth. This is an apparent, unreal angular approach that has nothing to do with distances. As for the real distance between them, it is very large, estimated at hundreds of millions or billions of kilometres.
