Last weekend there was no Formula 1 for a while, but this week there is another special race weekend on the program on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Grand Prix of Canada will be held on Sunday 18 June, in a period with many European races.
Canada is a popular destination for both many fans and the drivers themselves. The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is located on an artificial island a stone’s throw from Montreal, so that a trip to the circuit can be easily combined with a visit to the local catering industry. The high-speed track takes the drivers over 4.361 kilometers of asphalt and has a total of 14 corners. Immediately after Turn 14 is the ‘Wall of Champions’, an infamous part of the circuit where many of the sport’s greats have seen their races terminated early. The Grand Prix is run over 70 laps. The last edition dates from 2022 and was won by Max Verstappen.
Wildfires Canada
The race seemed to be on hold this year. Canada is currently being ravaged by massive wildfires, with a climax last week. That’s not something new for the North American country at this point in the year, but the fire would spread 12 times faster than usual. As a result, the province of Quebec and neighboring areas currently have their hands full trying to get the wildfires under control. Considerably less important: but Formula 1 confirmed last Thursday that the race weekend can continue, because the forest fires are 800 kilometers from the circuit. The air quality in Montreal is also said to be improving.
Canadian Grand Prix race weekend schedule
In principle, the race weekend in Canada will therefore be kicked off with the first free practice session on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 PM Dutch time. The second practice session of the day follows at 11:00 PM. Saturday 17 June starts at 6:30 PM with the third and final free practice, after which it is time to determine the starting grid through qualifying at 10:00 PM. The Grand Prix of Canada will be held on Sunday, June 18 at 8:00 PM. These unusual times are the result of the time difference with Montreal, where it is six hours earlier than in the Netherlands.
