One of the largest operations centers in Switzerland has started operations: The cantonal operations center (KEZ) in Bern-Forsthaus.
The canton police, the fire brigade and the rescue services are now concentrated in one place. The city and canton of Bern hope that this will benefit the various blue light organizations and the population, as it was said at the official opening on Tuesday.
Last year, almost a quarter of a million emergency calls were made in the canton of Bern to the emergency numbers 112 and 117 (police), 118 (fire department) and 144 (ambulance). The alarm platform operated by the canton police triggered more than 103,000 police, medical or fire services.
The coordination of the blue light organizations is of central importance. The responsible offices of the city, canton and building insurance therefore agreed around two years ago on the implementation of a joint operations center.
React faster and better
The aim was to be able to react faster and with better quality, explained the cantonal security director Philippe Müller at the opening according to the communiqué. «Even in the first few days, valuable time could be gained from several assignments. This shows that this goal is being achieved. “
The City of Bern Security Director Reto Nause spoke of a “prime example of uncomplicated cooperation between the city and the canton”. The bringing together of all blue light organizations brings even more security for the population.
The first employees of the cantonal police had already started work in the new infrastructure on Murtenstrasse in March. Gradually, employees from the operations centers in Bern and Mittelland-Emmental-Oberaargau, the medical emergency call center and the fire brigade emergency call center followed.
100 employees working in shifts
Almost 100 employees of the blue light organizations now have a new job. They answer the emergency calls in shifts around the clock.
The cantonal operations center Biel / Bienne started operations in March 2019. It also serves as a fallback point in the event of technical problems or failures on Murtenstrasse.
In the long term, there should be a new operations center in the cantonal police center in Niederwangen near Bern, which should be completed around 2027 next to the A12 motorway. The experience gained on Murtenstrasse should also flow into the planning in Niederwangen.
