The wait is over. The Opening Tournament of the Women’s Major Basketball League (LMBF) Copa Tigo Sports 2024 will begin on February 24. Six teams: San Salvador BC, ITD Santa Tecla, Santa Ana BC, the Liga Municipal Monseñor Romero (LMMR), Salvadoreñas BC and Batanecas BC, will compete for the glory of obtaining the long-awaited title.
“The league is a fundamental bastion for national teams to grow. With the work done by the federation, plus the support of INDES and FIBA, we are seeking radical changes in women’s basketball. As leaders we will do our job, but without the dedication and discipline of the players, the good moment that women’s basketball is going through would not be possible,” said Yamil Bukele, president of Fesabal.
The tournament will take place in two rounds, one against all, from which those classified for the playoffs will emerge, in which the teams placed from third to sixth will play series in the best of three games, with the following keys: 3 against 6 and 4 before 5.
The two best teams will qualify for the semifinals directly. The team that finishes as leader will face the winner of 4 vs 5, and the team that advances to the semis in second place will face the team that wins the 3 vs 6 series.
The winners of the semifinals will advance to the final. Both phases will take place in the best of three games.
The tournament consists of four weeks of competition in the first round, which is intended to end on Sunday, March 17; while the second round, also lasting four weeks, will end on Sunday, April 14.
The playoffs, which will be played in the best of three games, will be played between the week of April 17 and 21 and after them the semifinals are scheduled between April 24 and 28. The final is scheduled between May 1 and 5.
The current champions of the 2023 Clausura Tournament, San Salvador, were crowned in November of last year by defeating Santa Tecla in the fight for the championship.
The 2024 LMBF Opening will also be held thanks to the support of the private company and the sponsors that will accompany throughout the competition, among them are Tigo Sports, Lotería, Torogoz, Neuro Campolon Energy, Viro-Grip, Aloud Sports, Power On, Spalding.
“For Tigo Sports, being once again a sponsor of the women’s basketball league is a source of joy to continue supporting the talent of the players and the development of local sports. We are honored to be part of this tournament once again, and to transmit the growth of women’s basketball through our signal,” said Luis Padilla, manager of Tigo Sports.
For his part, Juan Carlos Panameño, manager of Torogoz, also expressed the commitment they assume once again with the LMBF. “We are present in the best events and women’s basketball is a great event. We have put a lot of effort into the development of the medals and trophies, we want it to be beautiful and live up to the effort that each of you make,” he said.
The Salvadoran Basketball Federation (Fesabal) has developed 10 tournaments in this league over six years. The journey began with the 2017 Apertura Tournament, and starting with the 2017 Clausura, the extinct Santa Tecla BC was crowned four consecutive times as champion of the competition.
FAS Fever, after two runners-up, dominated the league with three titles in a row and, later, ITD Santa Tecla and San Salvador BC emerged, with one crown each. The first champion, Guatemala, was invited to participate in the tournament.
The excitement of the LMBF will begin with the games scheduled for Saturday the 24th at the Inclusive Sports City (CDI), where San Salvador will face Santa Tecla, at 7:30 pm, and on Sunday the 25th, Salvadoreñas will face Santa Ana B.C., at 5:30 p.m.
