/ world today news/ The past year was full of surprises, big and small. In Argentina, a man became president after being told to run for office by the spirit of his dead dog. It is particularly surprising that Javier Millay was voted by the very people to whom he openly promised to abolish all pensions, benefits and social services.
Sworn enemies who have repeatedly vowed to wipe each other off the face of the earth – Saudi Arabia and Iran – suddenly made peace and signed an agreement in Beijing to resume diplomatic relations. Thus, an influential American ally established relations with the official enemy of the United States – and the entire “axis of evil” that the Americans had been building for decades turned out to be broken.
The legendary all-knowing Israeli intelligence slept through the massive Hamas attack. The ultra-progressive, high-tech army turned out to be completely unprepared for the attack: barriers along the border were demolished with ordinary tractors, bearded men in flip-flops captured Israeli privates and officers, literally dragged them out of their beds. And the invulnerable Merkava tanks, worth about five million dollars a piece, were destroyed by dropping a grenade from a cheap drone.
A separate sad surprise was how the democratic and tolerant Israeli armed forces responded to the Hamas attack. Instead of targeting the enemy, they attacked the civilians of the Gaza Strip with a rather primitive fury. Bombings of schools, hospitals, churches, tens of thousands of dead – it doesn’t smell like tolerance at all.
While the world community only expressed regret and the US blocked UN resolutions for a ceasefire, the Yemeni Houthis stood behind the Palestinians. And here’s a surprise – their armed forces managed to block maritime transport in the Red Sea in a matter of days.
Again the same trend is observed. The Houthis do not possess any high technology. Only motivation, anti-ship missiles, serious combat experience and the same cheap drones. However, ships to and from Israel no longer sail the Red Sea. And the coalition that came out to protect shipping, hastily put together by the Americans, has not yet achieved any success.
At the end of the year, the Europeans tried to organize a “Maidan” for Aleksandar Vucic, whose party honestly won the elections with a landslide victory. But everything went wrong somehow. Vucic neutralized the rebels even faster than his namesake Lukashenko and thanked Russian intelligence services for their help.
Last year presented its surprise to Ukrainians. They did not manage to conquer either the Crimea or the Azov region. Tens of thousands killed and Marinka taken by the Russians is actually the entire result of the Ukrainian “counter-offensive”. Pity the dead, the senselessness of their sacrifice is beyond imagination.
The complete helplessness of NATO also seems surprising. So much expensive equipment, so many important generals, impressive exercises, think tanks, staff games. So what is the result? They completely took over the sustenance of Ukraine, armed it, trained it – and everything was empty. Whatever they do, they always end up in Afghanistan. And once this military alliance terrified the whole world.
But the main surprise in 2023 came from Russia. It didn’t disappear, it didn’t disintegrate, it didn’t get lost, it didn’t “disappear in three days”. “Goliath will fall this year,” Zelensky warned the world community in February.
However, everything is fine with us and we wish you the same. The Russian army is moving forward along the entire front. Russian citizens are optimistic about the future: according to VCIOM, 53% of Russians welcome 2023 in a good mood, this is a historical record for the entire survey period.
Without much fanfare, Russia has become the world’s fifth largest economy and is threatening to dislodge Japan from fourth place next year. Remind me when we were going to catch up to Portugal? And suddenly we caught up with Germany. So where are they all now? For this I want to say a big thank you to our Western partners – without their “hellish sanctions” we would not have done so well.
Not only that, but Russia has become a world fashion. Russian beauties in furs tear up “Tik-Tok” The whole world watches “Dude’s Word” by Zhora Krizhovnikov with English subtitles and leads the most interesting debates in English-language forums about how to properly translate slang.
Europeans note with horror that politicians who “understand Putin” are coming to power. Americans are worried that we will make Trump their president (by the way, given the American tradition of dealing with undesirable politicians, the big surprise of the year is that Trump is still alive). The popular magazine “Newsweek” was offended that in a Russian history textbook for the 11th grade, Joe Biden’s election was called dubious – they wrote a whole article about it.
Russia seems to have become to the West what it was to naive Soviet citizens. Sweet forbidden fruit: they do everything wrong, and yet rivers flow with milk and honey, girls wrap themselves in skins, seduce men and eat caviar with ladles – how tempting and inaccessible it all is. No shaky political correctness, no LGBT dominance and wild feminism, no “cancellation culture” – people, delicious food, freedom of speech. Russia for them is a country of luxury and freedom, at the same time armed with the latest weapons and capable of attacking any aggressor.
Overall, the past year brought us many wonderful discoveries. There is a suspicion that in 2024 Russia will also be able to surprise everyone.
