Markus Schopp’s move to the island is dry. The Styrian is leaving TSV Hartberg and will be the new coach of the English championship club Barnsley FC.
The club from the north of England, which only failed to rise to the Premier League in the playoff, makes Schopp the successor to Valerien Ismael, who has moved to West Bromwich. A release clause makes the departure of the 47-year-old from Hartberg possible. He signs a three-year contract with Barnsley.
The Graz native came to Hartberg from SKN St. Pölten in the summer of 2018, not only held the class three times in a row with the Bundesliga club, but even made it into the European Cup.

Hartberg chairman Erich Korherr explains: “The change request came as a surprise, after we only recently extended it with him and the preparation for the season and squad planning are currently in a very important and intensive phase. The departure from Markus Schopp from Hartberg is of course a shame and regrettable. The timing is absolutely unfavorable. But the situation shows once again that Hartberg is a really good springboard for larger tasks and clubs.
The Styrians want to present a new coach before the weekend. One of the candidates is Lafnitz coach Philipp Semlic, who, however, does not have the necessary UEFA Pro license. Kurt Russ, most recently Schopp’s assistant, is in possession of one.
Barnsley remains true to his recent preference for coaches with a history in the Austrian Bundesliga. In front of the former LASK coach Ismael, the former WAC trainer Gerhard Struber sat on the bench. Co-President Paul Conway says: “It was phenomenal how Hartberg grew into the Bundesliga with the small budget under him.”
Schopp says: “It is great to come to a country where football is so big and steeped in tradition. I will help Barnsley to get to where it was last year. I will do everything for it.”
