‘Everything everywhere all at once’ now also top favorite for most important Oscar

The Guild of Hollywood Producers declares ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ the best film of the year. That makes the crazy movie hype a top favorite for the Oscar for best picture.

Every year the Oscar ceremony has some surprises in store. It is not easy to predict who will leave the room with a statue on the night of Sunday 12 March. But the awards that the Hollywood producers’ guild awards annually are a more than decent indicator of the winner for best picture. After all, in the past fifteen years, the film they awarded only differed three times from the later Oscar winner of this top category.

The fact that they voted ‘Everything everywhere all at once’ as best picture this weekend makes this crazy fun bunch now the top favorite for the most important Oscar.

With eleven nominations, ‘Everything everywhere all at once’ was not a futile contender from the start. In addition to lead actress Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu are also in the running for supporting roles. The director duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert also have a chance with their screenplay and direction, in addition to the statuette that they can receive as a producer.

More than one universe

The film is a wacky, cross-universe and heartwarming comedy. Yeoh plays a laundromat manageress with a napping husband, a rebellious daughter and a nagging tax inspector. Due to a bizarre incident, she ends up in a different version of reality – an alternate reality would arise at every crossroads in someone’s life.

Such a world of multiverses seems more like something for Marvel, but the directing duo extracted an absurd and lived-in piece of film fun that was shot on a small budget – at least by Hollywood standards: about 15 to 25 million dollars. Strangely enough, co-producers of the film are Anthony and Joe Russo, who are best known for the four Marvel films they directed.

Worldwide, Everything Everywhere All At Once grossed nearly $110 million. That’s not a small amount for a film of that order. Compared to Top gun: maverick, which was the most successful film of the year, which just under raised one and a half billion, that looks poor. Success is then relative, ‘Everything everywhere all at once’ was already a hype even before the film came to our screens. It has not become less since the extreme rain of prices.

Whether ‘Everything everywhere all at once’ wins the Oscar for best film, we will know in the night of Sunday 12 March.
