An interesting one Dossier The Federal Research Institute Thünen, which is responsible for fisheries, has published the herring on its website. There you not only learn that fish as salted herring was an important commodity 800 years ago and contributed to the strengthening of the Hanseatic League, but also how diverse the herring is used as food fish.
20 years of being herring
Herring hear well and loud noises scare away the fish. As a link between different levels of the food web, they play an important role in the marine ecosystem. If they are not eaten beforehand, they can reach an age of 20 years and more. The widespread Atlantic herring is 30 to 40 centimeters long and weighs between 120 and 200 grams.
However, herring is also caught in the climate trap: The fact that the herring stock in the western Baltic Sea is so bad has to do with the increased water temperature in winter. The dossier also explains whether and what can be done about it.

Mayor as a researcher
In terms of research history, the Thünen Institute directs attention to the polar tribe theory of herring migration. Amazingly, it was developed by a Hamburg mayor, Johann Anderson, and published 275 years ago.
