Everyone who is stuck at home should know the video chat app Houseparty

Houseparty

The four-year-old app Houseparty is making a comeback due to the corona crisis and is currently conquering the app charts.

Houseparty is essentially an app for group video chats, but it has some fun features ahead of its competitors.

In the app you can also play party games together, for example “Who am I?” Or trivia quiz questions.

The US video chat app Houseparty is currently celebrating a remarkable comeback. From the depths of the app charts, Houseparty has risen to fifth place in the German App Store this week – and it’s actually an old hat.

After the initial hype surrounding the video chat app in 2016, the app had been forgotten over the years. Probably also because competitors like Whatsapp brought similar products and functions onto the market.

With the spread of the corona virus and the associated exit restrictions, the downloads are now picking up again. The rush is even so big that the company recently announcedto discontinue some features in favor of streaming quality.

This is how the Houseparty app works

Houseparty is essentially an app for group video chats, but it has some fun features ahead of its competitors. Founder Ben Rubin therefore likes to call the app “the living room of the Internet”.

A divided display allows up to eight people to video chat with each other. The special thing about it: The chats are basically open to everyone from your friends list. For example, if you chat with a friend, other friends can join without an invitation – like at a party.

In the video chat there is also the possibility to play party games together. The repertoire includes, for example, “Who am I?”, Trivia quiz questions and activity elements such as drawing or describing terms.

In June 2019, Houseparty was taken over by the video game company Epic Games, which also has the hit game Fortnite in its portfolio. The company was founded in 2011 by Ben Rubin, Itai Danino and Sima Sistani. At that time, however, the app was still called Meerkat and pursued a different concept.
