This is the call made by OVAL, the trade association for occupational health and safety services and career counselors. Setting up a Career Shop is one of the recommendations of the Borstlap committee. OVAL has now worked out a plan for this. “The importance of development is enormous,” says OVAL director Petra van de Goorbergh. “Yet it is something that is not properly arranged in the Netherlands. The problem is that a patchwork of rules and authorities has emerged or advice is not feasible for everyone. With one national facility, we can ensure that optimal use is made of what is already there. ”
Five hundred locations
According to the trade association, the Career Shop must become a ‘fine-meshed network of more than five hundred physical locations’. Here the UWV, municipalities, employers’ organizations, trade unions and private service providers must be connected.
“In this way it is prevented that an extra counter is built for a counter. Here people can go for information and routes. It can be about career, employability, education, study choice and profession. ” Another important component is career vouchers, which everyone receives for free and can use for advice or a ‘career MOT’.
Commitment
Due to corona, there is a great demand for retraining and further training. However, employees are often not thrilled, Van de Goorbergh also acknowledges: “The call from the Career Shop should therefore not be without obligation. People have to report every four or five years, otherwise there will be consequences. ” Consideration is being given to the cancellation of the personal development budget or a reduction in unemployment benefit.
“A lot of people end up in the bins at the UWV or municipalities, but cannot get out. There must be a solution. If only because we cannot continue to finance it indefinitely. ”
