Everyone Has a Role in Tackling the Obesity Crisis

World Obesity Day in 2021 takes the theme of a global campaign, ‘Every Body Needs Everybody’. This campaign invites people around the world to overcome the global crisis related to obesity. The campaign also tries to define obesity as a disease which is a risk factor for many other diseases.

“Obesity is a disease that must be handled properly. We all have a role to play in helping to deal with obesity. We must realize that everyone plays an important role in building a healthier world,” wrote the page. World Obesity Day.

Obesity is a chronic condition that occurs due to the accumulation of fat in the body which is very high. WHO define overweight and obesity with guidelines.

In adults, being overweight can be seen from a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25. Obesity occurs when the BMI is greater than or equal to 30.

The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an imbalance between calories that enter the body and expenditure.

Globally, WHO sees an increase in the intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugar due to the emergence of various fast food choices that are considered more practical. Easily available packaged foods and drinks also contribute to obesity.

In addition, WHO has also seen an increase in lifestyle that temporarily makes the body physically inactive. This lifestyle is also a cause of obesity.

The combination of changes in diet and lifestyle so far has ultimately led to an increase in the number of obesity cases. In fact, untreated obesity can lead to a number of diseases such as cardiovascular disorders, especially heart and stroke, diabetes, and several types of cancer.
