If you are over 50 and have a mark on your arm, you are almost certainly vaccinated against smallpox. “Virtually everyone born before 1970 has it on”indicates Fernando Moraga-Llop, vice president of the Spanish Association of Vaccinology.
It became compulsory, it was put on for children under two years of age, but in the 1970s it began to be administered irregularly until its suppression in 1980. “Those who were born between 1970 and 1977 would say that they can have it, but in a not so systematic way,” adds Moraga-Llop.
But let’s go back to the scar, you can be much younger and have one because the tuberculosis vaccine It also leaves a mark but they have differences. “The smallpox vaccine left a scar like a coin, wide. The tuberculosis vaccine left a smaller scar,” explains Javier Álvarez, from the AEP Vaccines advisory committee.
Experts say that the human smallpox vaccine also protects against monkey pox. “Protection would be around 85%it is a broad protection,” Álvarez emphasizes. However, those who do not have it could receive it: a third-generation smallpox vaccine that would have to be inoculated after contact. “It would be done with the aim of avoiding infection, or reducing infection”, points out Moraga-Llop.
Health already studies all the therapeutic options including the purchase of vaccines.
Smallpox cases rise to 30 in Spain. “Of the 30 samples that have been analyzed so far by the Carlos III hospital, the first seven, their sequencing, have been positive,” says Carolina Darias, Minister of Health.
The other 23 cases have already tested positive for smallpox in PCR, only the sequencing would be missing of the samples to confirm it. “The probability that genomic sequencing reconfirms that it is a monkeypox virus is very high”, points out Elena Andradas, general director of Public Health of the Community of Madrid.
The Community of Madrid is the only one that has confirmed cases and also accumulates many other suspects. “we are not calmwe must be in that continuous epidemiological surveillance, “says Enrique Ruiz Escudero, Minister of Health of Madrid. Suspicions that extend to the Canary Islands, Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha.
It is known that the transmission is by very close contactwhich includes sexual intercourse, although it is not a sexually transmitted disease.
At the moment, there are no hospitalized, all cases are isolated and their evolution is good. “The evolution of people is slight and, therefore, no treatment was necessary”, Darias indicated.
Now, the key is to find the possible sources of contagion. The Minister of Health of Madrid, Ruiz Escudero, confirmed to laSexta that a source of contagion has been located in a sauna and that a large part of the positives are associated with that focus. Health already has a protocol for detecting cases.
Outside our country, concern is beginning to grow. In Portugal there are 23 confirmed cases, in the United Kingdom there are 20. In total, there are eight European countries that have detected this variant, which has also reached the United States, or Canada, the country with the highest number of suspected cases. In addition, Australia has also detected its first case.
