Scientists from the UK have investigated how different activities affect the symptoms of Long Covid. People who rest have fewer symptoms.
Post Covid and Long Covid lead to persistent symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath even weeks and months after a Covid-19 infection. A study by the University of Leeds has now provided insights into how different activities can influence symptoms. “Cognitive, social, self-care and physical activities triggered increased severity of all symptoms,” the study authors wrote. The research results would also show those affected how important an adapted everyday life is with regard to their symptoms.
Consequences of strenuous activities on Covid-19 symptoms
The researchers were able to evaluate the data from 376 Long Covid patients. To do this, they recorded their activities and symptom severity every three hours for 24 days. The aim was to analyze the effects of physical, cognitive and social exertion on symptoms. There were several Long Covid core symptoms taken into accountincluding shortness of breath, fatigue, pain, malaise, dizziness, palpitations, anxiety, depression and cognitive dysfunction.

The study found that all types of exertion can worsen Long Covid symptoms. In particular, fatigue increased by 1.8 points on a scale of 1 to 10 after heavy physical exertion, while heavy cognitive exertion increased fatigue by 1.5 points. Other symptoms such as heart palpitations and dizziness were also increased. Interestingly, the effects were not only evident immediately, but also hours later and even the next day when the activities were perceived to be highly stressful. For example, social activities the day before were associated with increased fatigue the next day. Long Covid? Adapt to everyday life, even if you encounter resistance
These findings highlight the need to adapt the everyday life of Long Covid patients accordingly. Those affected should structure their daily routines and working hours in such a way that they can minimize exertion and plan for recovery periods. The researchers recommend making adjustments at work and school to avoid deterioration, even if this leads to resistance. True to the motto: Health always comes first. Finally, the scientists emphasize the need for further research to find therapeutic solutions To develop approaches that improve the lives of Long Covid patients.
