The switch from diesel to B7 or from petrol 95 to E10 at the pumps has resulted in no more ‘accidents’. Roadside assistance, however, feared this. Last year in our country, eleven drivers filled up with the wrong fuel every day. That is less than five years ago.

For those who fill up the wrong fuel, the costs can be high, up to 3,000 euros and more. “Therefore one good advice. If it does happen and you notice it on time, don’t start the car. That makes a big difference ”, says Danny Smagghe of Touring, who had to intervene 2,132 times last year for incorrect refueling. At VAB this was about 1,800 times in 2019, so a total of almost eleven cases per day. “You have to calculate that seventy percent of the ‘accidents’ fill up with petrol instead of diesel, and about thirty percent throw diesel in their petrol tank,” says Smagghe. “Diesel contains a kind of paraffin to lubricate the fuel pump. If you fill up with petrol in a diesel vehicle and you start it, the entire pump will jam and you will soon have costs for a few thousand euros, ”warns Joni Junes of VAB. Touring has its own Fuel Rescue Team that depants members at home. VAB has vehicles towed to a garage. The most common causes of people making mistakes are being rushed or distracted. Or people who drive a replacement car and assume that it runs on the same fuel as their own car.
