The goals in the final stretch by Brazilian Richarlison and, in added time, by Demarai Gray, led to the comeback against Everton’s Arsenal (2-1) that relieved their coach, the Spanish Rafael Benítez, put into question in the last days for poor results.
Everton sought victory at Goodison Park and found it on the edge. The toffees accumulated eight games without winning. Two draws and six defeats that had brought Liverpool’s team closer to relegation.
Benítez’s team offered a better image against Arsenal, but the reunion with victory was not easy. In fact, the VAR annulled two points for millimeter offside.
The first in the 44th minute, signed by Richarlison. It did not rise to the scoreboard. And then Arsenal took the lead with a good cross from Kieran Tierney from the left wing that reached the penalty spot that the Norwegian Martin Odegaard reached, who executed a soft volley that beat Jordan Pickford.
Everton, with the score against, took clear control of the game. She lacked aim and when she did, the video refereeing frustrated her.
It happened again at game time to Richarlison who again beat Aaron Ramsdale although he was not worth it. The VAR drew the lines and determined that the South American player was in an illegal position.
The third time was the charm for the Brazilian. In the 80th minute, a long shot from Demarai Gray was repelled by the crossbar. Richarlison picked up the rebound and headed the ball into the net to tie the game.
The equalizer stimulated Everton, who found the reward for their effort in the 92nd minute. Gray caught the ball, searched for space and from the edge unleashed a powerful shot that was impossible for Ramsdale.
The triumph relieves Everton and Benítez, questioned in recent days. His team now ranks twelfth and leaves the decline it approached after recent defeats within five points.
For Arsenal it is a new step backwards. Second loss in a row. Europe is moving away again.
