2017 – A German Tiger attack helicopter crashes in the north of the African state of Mali. Two Bundeswehr soldiers are killed. Apparently there were material problems.

2007 – The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) sets limits on the use of undercover police officers. In principle, their use is permissible. However, this should not undermine fundamental rights of an accused.
2002 – The Green politician Cem Özdemir announces his withdrawal from federal politics. The reason is the cheap loan from a PR consultant and privately used bonus miles.
1957 – Walter Janka, communist and former head of the East Berlin publishing house, is sentenced to five years in prison in the GDR for forming a “counter-revolutionary group”. Janka had already been imprisoned in concentration camps and prisons under the National Socialists.
1947 – On the initiative of US President Harry S. Truman, the secret service “Central Intelligence Agency” (CIA) is founded.
1932 – The German navy training ship “Niobe” capsizes in a gust of wind near the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn. 69 midshipmen, sailors and officers drown, 40 people are saved.

1887 – The Polish ophthalmologist Ludwik Zamenhof uses the pseudonym “Dr. Esperanto” (The Hopeful) the first textbook for his artificial language.
1882 – Richard Wagner’s opera “Parsifal” premieres at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.
