2021 – The US manufacturer Johnson & Johnson stops shipping its corona vaccine to Europe. After examining very rare cases of cerebral vein thrombosis in the USA, the EU medicines agency gave the green light for the market launch in Europe a week later.
2017 – The US uses the GBU-43 super bomb to attack a tunnel system in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar. At least 94 fighters from the terrorist militia IS were killed. It is the first combat use of the largest non-nuclear US bomb.
2012 – A much-heralded and internationally criticized missile launch by North Korea ends in a crash landing. The regime in Pyongyang admits the failure just a few hours after the crash into the Yellow Sea.
1997 – The 21-year-old American Tiger Woods becomes the youngest player of all time to win the Golf Masters tournament in Augusta (US state of Georgia).

1992 – The strongest earthquake since 1756 shakes the Rhine area. The tremors reach a value of up to 6.0 on the Richter scale, the epicenter is in the Dutch city of Roermond. 40 people are injured, insurers put the damage at around 100 million Deutschmarks (51.12 million euros).
1992 – The terrorist Red Army Faction wrote in a letter announcing a departure from its previous violent strategy and demanding the release of “prisoners unfit for custody” and those “prisoners who have served the longest”. For years, the RAF had challenged the Federal Republic with murders, kidnappings and attacks.
1987 – Chinese Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang and his Portuguese counterpart Anibal Cavaco Silva sign the agreement to return the Macao enclave to China in Beijing. The nearly 450-year Portuguese rule over the area on the southern coast of China comes to an end on December 20, 1999.
1962 – The Beatles perform there for the first time at the opening of the Hamburg “Star Club”.
1742 – The oratorio “Messiah” (“The Messiah”) by George Frideric Handel is first performed in Dublin.
