History: What happened on July 5th?

2021 – The Dutch royal couple Willem-Alexander and Máxima pay a three-day state visit to Germany. Before the Bundesrat in Berlin, the king praised the mutual relationship and promoted the increased use of hydrogen to avoid CO2 in the fight against climate change.

2015 – The Hamburg warehouse district and the neighboring Kontorhaus district are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

2012 – The European Central Bank lowers the key interest rate in the euro area below one percent for the first time since the introduction of the euro. The interest rate is reduced by 0.25 points to 0.75 percent.

2007 – The 119th IOC General Assembly in Guatemala City decides unanimously that from 2010 onwards there will be the “Youth Olympic Games” for 14 to 18 year olds.

2002 – The German mechanical engineering group Babcock Borsig files for bankruptcy. 18,000 of the 21,000 jobs will remain in the course of the “insolvency under self-administration”, albeit under new employers. The name Babcock Borsig disappears.

1994 – Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie launch an online bookstore in Seattle. It was initially called Cadabra, shortly afterwards Amazon and developed into a shipping giant.

1987 – As the first German after 55 years, world champion Peter-Michael Kolbe wins the single race at the traditional rowing regatta in Henley, UK.

1947 – The news agency for the British zone dpd (Deutscher Pressedienst) receives a license from the British occupation authorities. dpd is one of the forerunners of the German Press Agency (dpa).

1922 – The League of Nations in Geneva decides to introduce the “Nansen Passport”, a document for stateless refugees suggested by the Norwegian diplomat Fridtjof Nansen.
