1937 – George VI is crowned King of Great Britain in Westminster Abbey in London. He succeeds his brother Edward VIII, who abdicated in December 1936.
1797 – Under pressure from Napoleon, the Great Council of Venice decides to dissolve itself and thus the end of the republic. The last Doge abdicates, his predecessors had ruled Venice as elected heads of state for life since the eighth century.
