2021 – At least 52 people are killed in a fire at a drinks factory in Bangladesh. The factory east of the capital Dhaka was built illegally and there were no emergency exits.

2020 – The EU Commission approves the German rescue package for companies. The Economic Stabilization Fund decided by the Bundestag in March is to provide companies with loans in the Corona crisis with 600 billion euros.
2007 – The US aircraft manufacturer Boeing presents its new 787 long-haul aircraft to the public for the first time.
1997 – The 16 NATO countries agree in Madrid to invite Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary to accession negotiations as the first candidates for an eastward expansion of the alliance. Accession is officially completed in 1999.
1982 – In the semi-finals of the soccer World Cup, German goalkeeper Toni Schumacher is able to prevent a French goal by fouling Patrick Battiston. The Frenchman loses two teeth and unconsciousness. Germany wins 5-4 on penalties.
1975 – Izchak Rabin is the first Israeli head of government to visit the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin.

1932 – During the Great Depression, the Dow Jones falls to 41.22 points, its lowest level in the 20th century. It will not reach its high of 381 points from September 1929 until 1954.
1927 – A flood catastrophe occurs in the Eastern Ore Mountains when more than 220 liters of rain per square meter fall within a few hours. 160 people die.
1497 – The Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sets out from Lisbon with a fleet to seek the sea route to India. In May 1498 he reached the southwest Indian coast at Calicut.
