2020 – The regional government of the Spanish island of Mallorca closes all bars at “Ballermann”. Hundreds of tourists, including from Germany, had celebrated at the weekend without the necessary corona protection measures.

2017 – Unusual violence occurs at the folk festival in Schorndorf near Stuttgart. Around 100 teenagers and young adults are hostile to the police. Around 50 criminal offenses are reported, including sexual offences.
2002 – The National Anti-Doping Agency (Nada) is officially founded in Bonn. The federal government is the main sponsor of the independent foundation.
1997 – Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace is shot dead in front of his home in Miami Beach, Florida. His alleged killer kills himself while trying to escape.
1992 – The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt passes the new state constitution.
1990 – The GDR Treuhandanstalt is established in East Berlin, which is responsible for the liquidation of the 8,000 state-owned enterprises (VEB).

1974 – Led by the Greek military junta, the National Guard stage a coup in Cyprus and overthrows the government of President Archbishop Makarios III. As a result, Turkish troops occupy the northern part of the island.
1937 – The first prisoners are deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar. By the time the Nazis were liberated in 1945, the National Socialists had deported almost 280,000 people to the concentration camp or its satellite camps. Around 56,000 people died from the inhumane camp conditions or were murdered.
1927 – In China, the government alliance of the nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek and the communists under Mao Tsetung breaks up. A civil war begins.
