The infection rates and hospital occupancy are not falling fast enough, and then there is the threat of the emerging omikron variant. Within weeks, this could be the dominant corona variant in the Netherlands: it seems that omikron is more contagious and that the vaccines protect against it less well.
All in all, reason for the now outgoing cabinet to continue the measures in force, until at least 14 January. The package will be reconsidered at the latest. The booster campaign is also being accelerated, it was announced.

Schools closed week earlier
First of all, something new: primary schools close a week earlier. The OMT has long urged three opinions to consider extending the Christmas holidays. The infection rates are highest in this age category. An extra week of vacation should help break the wave among primary school children.
Schools can switch to distance education, but this is not mandatory. Due to the short preparation time, there is understanding if schools will not teach at all next week, not even digitally. The after-school care will be closed next week, but will reopen during the Christmas holidays.
