EVENING FACT In August, Nîmes will be the city of the gods!

It was at La Bastide that the first two rehearsal evenings took place (Photo Anthony Maurin).

The sound and light show Nîmes city of the gods will be held in the arenas, at night, on August 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 15.

Between the realization of the mapping that will invade the track, the music that will resonate in the stands and, of course, the rehearsals of the volunteers who will evolve on stage, the show promises to be grandiose and recalls the ancient history of the region.

If you were familiar with the Great Roman Games – which became Hadrian – and if you appreciate this type of spectacle, you will not be disappointed by Nîmes, city of the gods. At night, all cats are gray but in the arenas, each historical period will have its colors, its rhythms, its costumes. A large water screen will be positioned on the toril when a smoke screen (fog) will be opposite, on the chair side. The sets will be numerous and the mapping will enhance the visual aspect of such an undertaking. Some acrobatic and aerial surprises, stunts and of course moments that mix humor with historical fantasy. But beware here we are talking about the gods so…

The story begins with its end. As for Hadrian, we are in 122 after Jesus Christ. The hour of the Pax Romana came and the amphitheater of Nîmes has just been built. the auctioneer, the narrator of the show, is preparing the next circus games when he is interrupted by children who attack a beggar. He comes to the aid of the beggar who, in reality, is a magician who gives him a treasure of small magic coins…

Oh, those coins! The modern world revolves around money, but for Nîmes, city of the gods these pieces will immerse the public in the old days. Each currency corresponds to an era which allowed the advent of Nîmes, but it is through the confrontation of men that their gods will confront each other.

A long time ago…

The first act describes the arrival of the Greeks on our shores. Through the founding myth of Marseilleor that of Dionysus and dolphinsthis episode summarizes the beginnings of this fantastic civilizational adventure, and of its most emblematic symbol: the vine.

After the Greeks, Nîmes starts the second. For the following act, it is the foundation of the city around its source (the fountain) which will be evoked. The tribe of Arecomique Volcanoes, after a long migration, settles in the sacred woods that surround the resurgence. She thus lays the foundations, around this source which she deifies by the here Namasfrom which the future Nemausus will be born.

Third act and to do this, the civilizations around the Mediterranean have faced many dangers. It is the great barbarian invasions of the end of the 2nd century BC that will be evoked. Faced with the danger posed by the Germanic tribes of the Cimbri and Teutons, without forgetting their terrible god Wotan, the people of Nîmes will be in trouble. Fortunately for them, and thanks to Mercury and Jupiter, the people of Nîmes team up with the soldiers of the Roman Republic to save their city. An alliance that inaugurates the coming fusion of the two cultures.

It is the fourth act which will make the perfect junction. The people of the Volques now participate in the great confrontation marking the advent of the Roman Empire: the conquest of Egypt. Marc-Antoine and Cleopatra lose to Octave and his faithful Agrippa. In the heavens, Isis and the gods of Egypt can do nothing against the power of Hercules, son of Jupiter. From this feat of arms, the Romans will mint a coin, theAce of Nimeswhich is still today the coat of arms of the city of the Antonins.

Back to 122 to race?

After these four historical games, return to 122 AD with the games that must take place on the arena track. The city is founded, the Roman peace offers wealth, development, and prosperity to the people who live there. Entertainment is the symbol of this prosperity. Bread and games ? The show therefore ends with one of its most emblematic representations: a chariot race! Thrills guaranteed.

From Saturn via Isis, from Dionysos to Wotan without forgetting Hercules, Mercury, Jupiter, and of course our lovely Namas, Nîmes city of the Gods will be spectacular! The decorations are made by CPPP and the teams of Yann Guerrerothe text isEric Teyssier and the direction will be helped by Isadora Sanchez. The numerous and exceptional volunteer members of the association Arena Ministries will also be there, as will the stuntmen ofEqui-staff/Equi-Tempus, Angel Ruiz’s floats. A show for the general public to take full advantage of it.

It is with the stones of its monuments that Nîmes writes this unique story, a story that transports us from the banks of the Rhône to the Egyptian coast, from Rome the eternal city to the banks of the Rhine. And it is the mythical story of these men who, adventurers and builders, will be told to you. These men who made Nîmes the city of the gods!
