The terrible fall at Lombardia
Guest of Alpine last week at F1 Qatar GPEvenepoel had returned to Belgium to continue preparing for next season. The Belgian champion, who as a teenager was destined for a football career (he grew up in Anderlecht’s youth team and played for three seasons in the Netherlands at PSV Eindhoven), has already suffered two serious accidents since the start of his career. The first, al Lombardy of 2020when he fell on the descent of the Sormano Wallkept him out for almost a year. The second, a fall at the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country, saw him fracture his right shoulder blade and collarbone. Three and a half months later, however, he finished his first Tour de France behind in third Pogacar e Vingegaard. At the Paris Games he then amazed himself by beating Ganna in the time trial and arriving alone under the Eiffel Tower in the road race after an attack on the Montmartre climb, in the midst of a sea of crowds and despite a puncture while crossing the courtyard of the Louvre. The image of Remco finishing his race on the finish line and rejoicing is one of the most seen and reproduced of the entire Parisian Olympics. In 2025 Evenepoel should participate in the Giro and Tour. In his career, the 24-year-old born in Aalst has already won 59 races, including one Vuelta, two Liège, three San Sebastian Classics, two time trial world championships and one in the road race.
