Having health insurance that covers expenses during pregnancy is a relief for many American families, but even so, they will likely have to shell out at least $3,000 with own resources.
Health costs associated with pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care, they are on average $18,865 dollars.
Of that total, women enrolled in large employer-sponsored insurance plans are responsible for paying an average of $2,854 out of pocketaccording to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation.
The analysis was released after the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade that guaranteed women the right to abortion.
In other words, women who are denied abortions in states where the procedure is no longer legal could be in trouble for thousands of dollarseven if they can’t afford it.
Costs can be even higher depending on the type of delivery. C-sections are more expensive, with an average price of $26,280, $3,214 of which is paid out of pocket.
On the contrary, the price of a vaginal delivery is on average $14,768$2,655 of which is paid out of pocket.
The higher costs associated with pregnancies resulting in cesarean section are not only due to the higher price of delivery, but also include higher expenses before and after delivery.
This may be associated with a higher intensity of service for the care for complications or underlying health conditions which can lead to cesarean section and recovery from surgery.
Also, raising a child, of course, has its own costs that are not taken into account in the analysis.
“This is just the first of many. This is the cost of the actual pregnancy and delivery and of course once you have the baby and raise it, There are the expenses of the baby’s medical care and caring for him throughout his childhoodsaid Cynthia Cox, vice president of KFF and one of the study’s authors.
“This (childbirth) could even, in many ways, be one of the smallest costs in the course of raising a child,” she noted.
Despite all these variations, the analysis was limited to people giving birth in a hospital and pregnancies ending in abortion or miscarriage were not included.
Only the cost of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum recovery for the woman were included, and not any subsequent health expenditures for caring for the infant.
