Even though the cases are down, the Covid pandemic isn’t over yet

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that although the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia had slowed, it was not over. Therefore, the government hopes that everyone will continue to comply with the health protocols.

He explained, currently the Covid-19 pandemic has started to slow down, it can be seen from positive confirmation cases and those who enter the hospital and die drastically. But it’s not that easy to solve.

“No pandemic is over quickly. Some have been completed in five, ten or even hundreds of years,” he said in a virtual webinar broadcast by PKS TV as quoted on Sunday (11/14/2021).

Therefore, at this time what the government can do is find ways to continue to control the transmission of the virus. One of them is vaccination so that people have immunity against the virus.

“Because it can’t be finished quickly, we already know, our target is how to reduce the rate of transmission, not eliminate it immediately. Because it takes years, hundreds or even hundreds,” he said.

According to him, steps to control the transmission of the virus are carried out so that Indonesian health facilities do not become paralyzed or do not exceed their capacity limits. Currently the capacity of domestic hospitals is 400 thousand beds and the maximum for handling the Covid-19 pandemic is only 30% or 120 thousand.

“So we take care not to (Covid-19 patients) enter the hospital more than 120 thousand. We maintain a maximum of only 20% of active cases from 120 thousand, namely 600 thousand. So facing a pandemic, whatever it is, the main goal is to reduce the transmission rate,” he explained. .

According to him, there are four strategies to reduce the rate of cases. Three strategies for healthy people and one strategy for sick people. Strategies for those who are still healthy are behavioral changes or strict procedures or known as 3M. Second, detect or 3T and third is vaccination.

Then, the fourth strategy for the already sick is therapeutic or treatment. This is considered as a strategy of squeezing that must be done.

“Three strategies are directed at healthy people upstream and if they get sick there is a downstream strategy, namely treatment. If you enter this stage (treatment) it’s actually too late. So it’s best not to get sick, we try to keep people healthy, not cure sick people,” he said.
