Even though it has been a long time to heal, the risk of blood clots can be experienced by COVID-19 survivors

Jakarta

Swedish researchers analyzed national data from more than one million people and found that the increased risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs in COVID-19 survivors can last up to six months after infection.

“The risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism persists for at least six months after infection,” said Richard Becker, professor and director of the UC Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute.

In a study published in the British Journal of Medicine (BMJ), researchers saw a five-fold increase in the risk of opening blood in the deep veins, especially the legs, 33-fold in the risk of opening of blood in the lungs, and a two-fold increase in the risk of bleeding.

This risk also increases for 70 days after COVID-19 infection for blood clots in deep veins, 110 days for blood clots in the lungs, and the risk of bleeding will increase two months after infection.

“Severity of infection and risk profiles among COVID-19 survivors help identify people who are most likely to develop deep vein blood clots after discharge from hospital,” Becker said.

The risk of blood clots is also greatest during the first wave of the pandemic and those with a history of other illnesses.

The risk of blood clots, especially deep veins can increase the risk of death.

“This can put enormous stress on the heart and be life-threatening,” said Dr. Daniella Kadian Dodov, a vascular medicine specialist at Mount Sinai Heart, New York.

Dr. Kadian explained that treatment with blood-thinning drugs can stop the blood clotting process and break up the clots. However, in some cases, the traces of blood clots will not completely disappear.

According to him, the COVID-19 vaccination is also the strongest protection against the consequences associated with COVID-19 infection.
