Dozens of companies have joined the “Stop hate for profit” protest campaign which translates to a stop to advertising on social platforms. In particular on those of Mark Zuckerberg – therefore Facebook and Instagram – accused of not doing enough to counter racist and hateful content. Now the latest addition is added: StarBucks. The coffee giant does not formally adhere to the protest but has announced that it has suspended advertising investments on all social platforms (like Coca-Cola before him): «We believe that more must be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities, and we believe that both business leaders and policy makers must come together to contribute to real change. We will stop advertising on all social media while continuing internal discussions with our partners and civil rights organizations in an attempt to stop the spread of hate speech, “reads a statement on the official website.

We said that Starbucks is the latest addition. Because Mark Zuckerberg is already suffering from the consequences of these protests, launched on June 17 by a group promoting the fight for civil rights and which includes the American NAACP, Color of Change and Anti-Defamation League. Bloomberg estimates that losses already amount to around 8 billion for the suspension of Facebook advertisements. The CEO responded to the campaign and criticisms of the disinformation that travels on the platform, announcing new labels that highlight the posts relating to the American vote and that refer to an information page. “There will be no exceptions for politicians in any of these cases,” he said. Adding: “I am optimistic that we can make progress on public health and racial justice, maintaining our democratic traditions around freedom of expression and vote.” But the boycott continues in the meantime.
