It is reminiscent of something in America the Great Resignation of The Big Quit has come to be called: a record number of people resigned there to do something else. “It could be that something like this is going on,” Phlippen says. “But in the Netherlands we do see that people are still applying for jobs, but there are many more vacancies due to the well-functioning economy.”

Not only does this offer negotiation opportunities for people in such a job, according to Phlippen it also provides good options for the estimated million Dutch people who are sitting at home. “For a long time, employers were not keen on them, but that is different now. It can save a lot of government spending that normally goes to social participation policies. Nothing is more effective than a desperate employer.”

They are not yet desperate at security company Westvlietwacht, but director Mark Zwienenberg has never experienced such a shortage in the 33 years that he has been in security. He even set a starting bonus for the first time, but that didn’t help much:
