Even LG’s new minimalistic devices are upgradable

LG Electronics has a new line of minimalist devices that do away with all the unnecessary buttons and decorative trappings in a refreshing “less is more” approach. The refrigerator, washer, dryer, oven, and dishwasher are all said to have improved controls for a “hassle-free” user experience.

The devices are also upgradable through software and hardware as part of a program LG launched in January. “The upgradability challenges the notion that expensive home appliances are designed with planned obsolescence in mind,” said Lyu Jae-cheol, then president of LG Electronics Home Appliances. “We want customers to feel like they are getting a new washing machine or refrigerator throughout the life of an LG appliance, not just when they bring the appliance home for the first time.” Let’s just hope that LG doesn’t align itself with the auto industry in order to continuously extort money from customers by charging fees to activate the basic functions that the devices are already equipped with.

Unfortunately, LG’s announcement lacks details like specs, pricing, or availability dates, so we’ll have to wait until CES kicks off on January 5 to find out more.
