Ch!pz has been an indispensable part of the Top 40 for years, but it’s now been fifteen years since the group reached number one. Yet even Kim Kardashian and her daughter North are suddenly dancing 1001 thousand and one nights. Why is the 2004 song suddenly a hype and that also means the band’s comeback?
“We were slightly hysterical,” the Ch!pz members told the ANP when they saw Kim Kardashian do some dance moves to their song. “Having fun with my Northie,” the reality star wrote with a video of them choreographing to the song that originated on TikTok.
But where do we know Ch!pz from? Cowboys, Carnival in CH!PCS in black: are three of the biggest hits of the 2000s. The group was founded in 2003 through auditions and already consisted of Rachel van den Hoogen, Kevin Hellenbrand, Cilla Niekoop and Peter Rost. Their first single hit the mark immediately. CH!PZ In Black (who you gonna call) it takes second place in the Top 40 and first place in the Single Top 100.
This is followed by four No. 1 results on both lists: Cowboys, 1001 thousand and one nights, One two Three! in Carnival. Thanks to the great success in Holland, the team behind Ch!pz aims for international success and not without results. Cowboys it also comes first in Germany and even reaches the charts in the musically competitive UK. Blockbuster success was also achieved in Austria, Switzerland and parts of Scandinavia.
As soon as Ch!pz emerged, they disappeared from the scene a few years later. Until 2007 some top 10 hits in the Netherlands follow, a year later there is another TV show, but after that it gets quieter. In 2010 the management decided that the group was no longer successful enough and Ch!pz was disbanded.

The resurrection of Ch!pz
In 2018, Ch!pz announces an attempt at a comeback, initially as a joke. There will be no new music yet, but performances are planned. They can be found at festivals and Qmusic’s Foute Party.
The group is now suddenly in the spotlight again because new dances to the song are being invented on TikTok 1001 thousand and one nights. Many of those who grew up with Ch!pz will still remember the choreography from the video clip. But on TikTok it looks completely different.
Ch!pz cleverly responds by recording a video together with influencer Thomas Brok. The group performs the original choreography, Brok the TikTok dance. This video has been viewed over sixteen million times at the time of writing. Kardashian’s video count has reached 8.5 million. The song has already been used in more than three million creations on the app.
With these high numbers on TikTok, you’d also expect significant growth on Spotify. Although the song’s popularity is increasing somewhat, the counter still stands at fifteen million plays. This might be because the artist and song title are not mentioned in most of the TikTok videos featuring the song Ch!pz.
Ch!pz members are very excited about this new focus. They think it’s special that a song from 2005 can trigger all of this, various media say. Booking requests are also coming in again. Whether this will also lead to their concerts and new music, they dare not tell the ANP for sure.
“People who knew us from the past and now meet us all the time say: It’s great that you’re back. We love your music, but we invent something new. Maybe we should sit down and listen to it, because we hear so often now.”
