Apple has now decided to allow what it has long refused, and it was out of the question. From next year, it will allow customers to repair their phones at home in the event of damage, and will even send them original parts, tools and instructions. The novelty will first apply to the iPhone 12 and 13.
The service called Self Service Repair will be available from the beginning of next year in the United States, and should gradually be extended to other countries in the coming months. It should also be possible to repair Mac laptops at home later, the American radio station said NPR.
The technology giant said it wanted to allow those who feel at home repaired to do so. In the first phase of the project, DIYers will be able to play with a broken display, camera and battery, which are the most frequently repaired components. Other options should gradually increase.
The service will create special e-shops called Self Service Repair Online Store, from where customers will be able to order more than 200 spare parts and tools. Apple also promises to collect used components back for recycling.
It comes with a novelty after the so-called began to grow “movement for the right of correction”. Companies are beginning to be pressured to provide customers with spare parts and allow them to repair equipment on their own. The United Kingdom has already imposed this obligation on electronics manufacturers, and the European Commission is just getting ready to do so.
The American company was famous for selling “encapsulated” devices, from which even the battery cannot be removed. Until now, iPhones can only be officially repaired at Apple Service Centers.
The company’s management warns that repair at authorized branches will still be the best solution for the vast majority of customers. Self Service Repair is said to be intended for technically proficient individuals who have experience with electronics repairs.
