It’s the start of a new year! This means that we are summarizing the awards for games released in 2022. The Steam Favorite Child award was just given to Cyberpunk 2077, but even fans of the game believe that there were better titles last year.
Players on the game’s subreddit believe the award should have gone to an indie game, not a massive AAA game. It’s hard to justify the Favorite Child award when the game is the product of constant crunches.
One of the first comments a post on reddit – “sad gnome pickaxe sounds” by whereismyfemur. This refers to Deep Rock Galactic, a co-op FPS where you mine for minerals across the galaxy. It’s not much, but it’s honest work, and even Cyberpunk fans feel it deserves more respect for the joy it brings to people.
No Man’s Sky, a game that one commentator called “the blueprint for fixing a broken game,” is also a favorite among the Cyberpunk community as a winning game. Along with Final Fantasy 14, it’s one of the few games of the past decade that hit the market in a truly pitiful state, but changed the game with constant updates and improvements.
All of the winners in recent years have been live-serviced AAA games, with one independent exception:
- 2017 – Warframes
- 2018 – Grand Theft Auto 5
- 2019 – Grand Theft Auto 5
- 2020 – Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- 2021 – Terrarium
Enolafaye commented, “It’s actually pretty funny that GTA 5 won twice and NMS never won.” UberSparten wrote: “Yes, gta can back off because she is a child of the love of money.” One gamer, xjrsc, joked that Edgerunners gave the game too many good ratings: “You don’t understand, they released an anime, so the game is good now.”
