Poet Amanda Gorman receives praise from Joe Biden after her performance at the inauguration. Her poem was about the harsh social reality in the US – but also about hope.

22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman outshone many celebrities at Joe Biden’s inauguration, and not just because of her gaudy coat. Your performance is one of the most talked about yesterday.

Gorman, invited by President Biden, read a poem in which she interweaves her own life story with America’s harsh social reality.

This earned her a lot of reactions and praise on social media. “On a day for the history books, Amanda Gorman presented a poem that hit more than the moment,” wrote former US President Barack Obama on Twitter. Entrepreneur and talk show host Oprah Winfrey wrote: “I’ve never been more proud to see another young woman rise!”

On Wednesday Gorman read her work “The Hill We Climb” (in German: The Hill We Climb). It is about the difficult times that the US has endured and still has to endure – but also about hope for the future.

“Even as we grieved, we grew” – “Even as we mourned, we grew,” Gorman said urgently, and: “We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour. But right in the middle we found the strength to open a new chapter, to bring hope and laughter to ourselves ».

Born in Los Angeles in 1998, Gorman was honored in 2017 by the US Library of Congress with the title “National Youth Poet Laureate”. At past inaugurations of US presidents, poets and writers such as Robert Frost or Maya Angelou have repeatedly performed works – Gorman is by far the youngest.
