Even adults absolutely need vaccinations

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Vaccination is considered not only the perogrative right of children. Adults also still need to get vaccinated.

Internal medicine doctor and vaccinologist Dirga Sakti Rambe in the KPCPEN Webinar with the theme ‘The Importance of Immunization in Adults’ said that vaccination against adults not only serves to protect the person concerned, but also indirectly helps protect the people around him.

“Evidently [dengan] vaccinating adults, we are actually protecting people at home, our families, “said Dirga in a press statement received on Sunday (1/11).

He explained that there are many considerations that cause someone in adulthood to still need to be vaccinated. One of them is that the person concerned had never received a vaccine as a child.

In addition, people who reach old age also need to get vaccinated because at that age, antibodies generally decrease. Furthermore, vaccination also needs to be carried out for sufferers of chronic diseases and unhealthy lifestyles.

A number of vaccines recommended for adults include the influenza vaccine, pneumonia, tetanus, diphtheria, pertusi, Hepatitis A and B, rabies to the HPV vaccine (Human Papillomavirus).

During the pandemic caused by the SARS Cov-2 or Covid-19 virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) also advised adults to administer influenza and pneumonia vaccines.

“Indeed, the influenza and pneumonia vaccines do not prevent us from being infected with Covid-19, but we know that people who have influenza and pneumonia are more susceptible to Covid-19,” said Dirga.

According to Dirga, research shows that Covid-19 patients who have received influenza and pneumonia vaccines experience milder symptoms. In addition, the mortality rate for patients who had received the vaccine earlier became smaller.

Melissa Karim, a public figure, also agrees on the importance of vaccines for adults. For him, vaccinating early is very important to fight infectious diseases. Apart from protecting yourself, vaccination will protect other people who cannot be vaccinated for various reasons.

“I am a person who complies with immunization. Because to make a system healthy, a healthy society, we have to work together,” said Melissa.
