Evan Fournier Booed in Return to Madison Square Garden: Knicks Fans React to Frenchman’s Comeback with Detroit Pistons

Shelved by the Knicks for many months, Evan Fournier made his comeback in New York on the night of Sunday to Monday with the Detroit Pistons, his new franchise. The Frenchman, despite being impeccable during his ban, was heavily booed by the public at Madison Square Garden.

Evan Fournier probably didn’t expect that. Back in New York for the first time since his transfer to Detroit in early February, the man who wore the Knicks jersey for two and a half years was whistled by his former audience on the night of Monday to Tuesday in the NBA.

When he scored, the French international was booed by part of Madison Square Garden. A rather surprising reaction, as the former Nuggets and Magic player adopted an impeccable attitude throughout his New York adventure.

Put in the closet by Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks coach, in the middle of the 2022-2023 season, Fournier never came out of the ranks despite poor playing time. This season, before his transfer to Detroit, Fournier only played three games in a Knicks jersey. The low profitability of his salary (nearly 19 million dollars per year, 17.5 million euros) compared to his productivity probably remains stuck in the throats of Knicks fans. Even if Fournier has always remained very professional.

Grimes: ‘I was surprised’

Quentin Grimes, transferred from the Knicks to Detroit at the same time as Fournier, did not hide his astonishment after the meeting: “I was surprised. Evan was my veteran, he taught me a lot of things. When he was put on the bench, he was one of the guys who supported me the most during my rookie year. My whole second season, he told me what to do because he was in my place. During my rookie year what did he do? He broke the Knicks three-point records, he must have been 4th or 5th in the entire league. So, yeah, it wasn’t nice to see that from the fans , he did a lot for this team. When I was there, he was always on time, always professional, but it’s Knicks fans, that’s how it goes.”

On the floor, the Knicks beat the Pistons in money time (113-111). In 20 minutes, Fournier, who finally managed to string together matches (he was playing his fifth in a row) compiled 7 points (3/5 shooting), 2 interceptions and 1 assist.
