Evacuation of the population continues on the island of Palma, fleeing from the volcano / Article

Several hundred more people have had to evacuate due to a volcanic eruption on the island of Palma in the Canary Islands. Lava is taking over more and more territories, destroying not only buildings but also agricultural land.

Given the catastrophic situation, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has visited the island of Palma for the fourth time since the beginning of the volcanic eruption and promised generous financial support.

As Lava takes over more and more territories, about 800 more people will have to leave their homes on Wednesday. The authorities have only taken a few hours to pack up, and people have to make quick decisions about what to take and what to leave.

The school and loads of teaching materials are also evacuated in a hurry. Many, however, hope that their homes on the way to the volcano will remain intact.

“It’s really depressing and stifling. We are now helping friends and relatives evacuate. It’s so sad we only have a couple of hours to leave this place. You have to choose what to take with you, what to leave, ”says a local resident.

The volcano became active more than three weeks ago, and since then the lava has covered more than 600 hectares of land. Homes and cottages have lost several thousand people. Farmers, on the other hand, have suffered huge losses as lava has covered their banana plantations.

The Canary Islands rely mainly on income from banana growing as well as tourism. Tourism has stalled due to the closure of the local airport from time to time due to airborne ash and the threat of a volcano.
